This time of the year

Christmas is that special time of the year which I dedicate entirely to my family. As I mentioned last year, time is the best gift. In particular, the time spent with the loved ones that live far from us. Another Christmas I spent with my husband and parents in the South of Europe. It was a time of relax, a break (also from the Internet), time for conversations, long strolls through Lisbon and trips to its surroundings. I wish you (and myself) that the New Year 2014 is full of such special moments. Not only on special occasions. Let us enjoy small things in life and give time to others, and ourselves. 

La Navidad es esa época especial del año que dedico por completo a mis seres queridos. Como mencioné el año pasado, el tiempo es el mejor regalo. Sobretodo si es el tiempo que se puede pasar con los familiares que viven lejos. Otra Navidad que pasé con mi marido y mis padres en el Sur de Europa. Fue un tiempo de descanso (incluso del Internet), el tiempo para conversar, dar largos paseos por Lisboa e ir de excursiones a sus alrededores. Os deseo (y a mí misma también)que el Nuevo Año 2014 este lleno de momentos tan especiales. No sólo en ocasiones especiales. Qué disfrutemos más de las pequeñas cosas de la vida, ofreciendo nuestro tiempo a los demás, y a nosotros mismos.

Święta Bożego Narodzenia to ten szczególny czas w roku, który całkowicie poświęcam rodzinie. Tak jak wspominałam w zeszłym roku, czas to najcenniejszy prezent. Szczególnie czas spędzony z bliskimi, od których na co dzień dzieli nas spora odległość. Kolejną już Gwiazdkę spędziliśmy z moim mężem i rodzicami w cieplejszym klimacie. Był to czas odpoczynku (również od internetu), rozmów, spacerów po Lizbonie i wycieczek po jej okolicach. Życzę Wam (i sobie), aby Nowy Rok był pełen takich szczególnych chwil. Nie tylko od święta. Czerpmy radość z drobiazgów i ofiarujmy czas - sobie i innym. 

Looking back

I usually do not write here about garments I am wearing. You can see what I put on in the pictures;)I do not think that in this outfit you have paid much attention to the skirt. So, here's its short story. This skirt has been in my wardrobe for more than 15 years! My Mum bought it (there was a matching blazer too) for me to wear it on my High School exams. Incredible that I still have it and sometimes wear it. Definitely it's worth keeping good quality and classic pieces. However, in fact I'm writing about this skirt because it brought me back to 90s. I´m from the generation that was watching "The Wonder Years" and "Beverly Hills 90210" (yes, I did watch it too), wearing Vans trainers, Fruit of the Loom sweatshirts and Enrico Benetti and JanSport backpacks. Does anybody still remember that? What are your 90s memories?

Normalmente no escribo aquí mucho sobre las prendas que llevo. Las podéis ver en las fotos;) No creo que en este look os habeis fijado en la falda. No llama mucha atención pero esta prenda ha estado en mi armario por más de 15 años. Me la compró mi mamá para mis examenes en el instituto. Es increíble que todavía la tengo en mi aramario y a veces me la pongo. Sin duda vale la pena guardar las piezas clásicas y de buena calidad. De hecho estoy escribiendo sobre esta falda porque me ha acordado los años 90. Soy de la generación que estaba viendo "Aquellos maravillosos años" y "Beverly Hills 90210" (sí, también miraba esta serie...). Llevabamos zapatillas Vans, sudaderas Fruit of the Loom y mochilas de las marcas Enrico Benetti y JanSport. ¿Alguien más se acuerda de eso? ¿Que recuerdos de los 90 tenéis vosotras?

Z reguły nie piszę o tym, co mam na sobie, bo strój jaki jest, każdy widzi ;)  Pewnie nie spodziewacie się, że w tym akurat zestawie zwrócę Waszą uwagę na spódniczkę, ale tak właśnie jest. Tę spódniczkę (była do tego w komplecie jeszcze marynarka) kupiła mi Mama na egzaminy do liceum. Podstawówka trwała wtedy 8 lat, a gimnazjum w ogóle nie było. Jak widać, czasem nie warto pozbywać się rzeczy dobrych gatunkowo i klasycznych, bo a nuż wrócimy do nich nawet po 15 latach (sic!). Tak naprawdę jednak spódniczka to tylko pretekst do przeniesienia się w czasie do lat 90. Należę do tego pokolenia, które oglądało z wypiekami na twarzy "Cudowne lata" i "Beverly Hills 90210" (tak...), chodziło w Vansach, bluzach Fruit of the Loom i jeansach Big Star. Przedmiotem pożądania były plecaki JanSport i Enrico Benetti. Ktoś to jeszcze pamięta?? W Polsce zaczęły się pojawiać pierwsze zagraniczne sklepy i nowe polskie, ale bardziej "zachodnie" marki (sklepy sieci Troll były jakby wyjęte z zupełnie innej rzeczywistości). Do dziś pamiętam też elektryzująco niebieskie rurki, które przywiozłam z podróży z rodzicami na południe Włoch w drugiej połowie lat 90. Wspomnę, że jechaliśmy samochodem, co samo w sobie wydaje się teraz trudne do pomyślenia.  Ile się przez ten czas zmieniło...

Minimalism has recently been a key word. Fashion or style? Style or fashion? For me? Minimalism is not for me. 

Últimamente el minimalismo se ha puesto muy de moda. ¿La tendencia o el estilo? ¿El estilo o la tendencia? ¿Que es para mí? El minimalismo no es para mí. 

Minimalizm to ostatnio słowo-klucz. Moda to czy styl? Styl czy moda? A dla mnie? Minimalizm, to nie dla mnie.

More channels, more services, more devices, more ads, more websites. All competing for our attention. It's getting harder and harder to concentrate. There are so many distractions: emails keep coming, ads keep popping on the screen, social media are getting updated all the time... It's not easy to choose just one option and focus our attention on it for longer time. Maybe other options are better? Maybe we are missing on something? Nicolas Carr wrote in his book "The Shallows. What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains" that "For some the very idea of reading a book has come to seem old fashioned, maybe even a little silly…". The author even admits that while reading: "my concentration starts to drift after a page or two". I remember that when I was a child I used to search for information in a big Encyclopaedia. It was taking some time to find relevant information. Sometimes not very up to date. Nowadays we are bombarded by data. We get the latest news all the time and from all over the world. Do we know more now when we do not have to dig up information?

Más canales, más servicios, más dispositivos, más publicidades, más páginas web. Todos compiten por nuestra atención. Cada vez es más dificil concentrarse. Hay tantas distracciones : los emails siguen llegando cada rato, las publicidades están apareciendo en la pantalla, las redes sociales están siendo actualizadas constantemente... No es fácil elegir sólo una opción y centrar nuestra atención en ella por más tiempo. ¿Tal vez otras opciones son mejores ? ¿Quizás estamos perdiendo algo importante? Nicolas Carr en su libro "Superficiales. ¿Qué está haciendo Internet con nuestras mentes?" escribió que "para algunos la idea misma de la lectura de un libro parece pasada de moda, tal vez incluso un poco tonta ... " . El mismo autor admite que al leer : "mi concentración comienza a ir a la deriva después de una o dos páginas". Recuerdo que cuando era niña solía buscar información en una gran enciclopedia. Encontrar algo requería un poco de tiempo y a veces la información no estaba muy actualizada. Hoy en día somos bombardeados por los datos . Recibimos las últimas noticias todo el tiempo y de todo el mundo. ¿Pero sabemos realmente más hoy en día? 

Więcej kanałów, więcej serwisów, więcej urządzeń, więcej stron internetowych, więcej reklam. Wszystkie one walczą nieustannie o naszą uwagę. Coraz trudniej jest się skoncentrować, bo przecież nieustannie napływają nowe informacje. Przychodzą maile, na ekranie pojawiają się reklamy, serwisy społecznościowe zasypują nas aktualizacjami, z komunikatorów mrugają nowe wiadomości... Trudno poświęcić uwagę i czas jednej rzeczy, gdy wokół jest tyle rożnych opcji. Gdzieś z tyłu głowy pojawia się bowiem pytanie: czy to jest najlepszy wybór? Może coś ważnego mi własnie umyka? Nicolas Carr w swojej książce "Płytki umysł. Jak Internet wpływa na nasz mózg" napisał, że "niektórzy sam pomysł czytania książki uważają za przestarzały, może nawet niedorzeczny...". Zresztą, autor sam przyznaje, że w trakcie czytania jego "koncentracja odpływa po jednej lub dwóch stronach". Pamiętam, że w czasach, gdy byłam małą dziewczynką głównym źródłem wiedzy i informacji była kilkutomowa encyklopedia na półce w biblioteczce. Znalezienie tam potrzebnych faktów zajmowało trochę czasu, a w dodatku nie zawsze były one aktualne. Obecnie jesteśmy bombardowani przez informacje. Docierają do nas najnowsze, na bieżąco aktualizowane wiadomości z całego świata. Dzisiejszy news jutro zostanie zapomniany i zastąpiony nowym. Ale czy teraz rzeczywiscie wiemy więcej niż kiedyś?

New prefix

The change of prefix from 2 to 3. So I´ll never again be twentysomething. How is it? Almost the same, but not exactly. For example, you´re telling some story about how it was when you were a student and suddenly you realise that you are talking about something that happened 10 years ago! Or one day you get to know that interns in the company where you work were born in the 90s (yes! nine-ties!). A list of new music groups you´ve never heard of is getting bigger and bigger. The same as the number of pictures of cute babies that your friends post on Facebook. Instead of going to parties, more and more often you go to dinner parties. Or sometimes you only meet your friends for lunch. All of you have to wake up early the following day, right? If you were born in the late 80s or in 90s you probably have no clue what I´m talking about here. But don´t worry, one day you will ;)

El cambio de prefijo de 2 a 3. Así que nunca más seré veinteañera. ¿Cómo es? Casi igual, pero no exactamente. Por ejemplo, estás contando una historia sobre algo que pasó cuando eras una estudiante y de repente te das cuenta de que estás hablando de algo que sucedió hace 10 años! O un día te enteras que los internos en la empresa donde trabajas nacieron en los años 90 (¡sí! los años no-ven-ta!). Una lista de los nombres de nuevos grupos músicales que no conoces se hace cada vez más y más larga. Lo mismo pasa con el número de fotos de bebés encantadores que tus amigos publican en Facebook. En vez de salir de fiesta, más y más a menudo te vas con tus amigos a la cena. O a veces sólo vas a almuerzar. Todos tenéis que levantarse temprano el día siguiente, ¿verdad? Si naciste a finales de los años 80 o en los 90 probablemente no tienes ni idea de lo que estoy contando aquí. Pero no te preocupes, eso también te espera ;)

Zmiana prefiksu z 2 na 3, czyli już nigdy nie będę dwudziestoparolatką. Jak to jest z trojką z przodu? Właściwie tak samo, ale jednak pewne znaki, świadczą o tym, że trochę inaczej. Na przykład, opowiadasz o jakiejś sytuacji ze studiów i nagle dociera do Ciebie, że mówisz o czymś, co zdarzyło się 10 lat temu! Albo któregoś dnia zdajesz sobie sprawę, że stażyści w firmie, w której pracujesz urodzili się w latach 90 (tak! Dzie-więć-dzie-sią-tych!). Lista nowych grup muzycznych, o których nie słyszałaś rośnie tak szybko jak liczba zdjęć uroczych bobasów zamieszczanych przez Twoich znajomych na Facebooku. Coraz częściej zamiast na imprezę idziesz z przyjaciółmi tylko na kolację. A czasem to jedynie na lunch. Przecież trzeba wcześnie wstać następnego dnia, prawda?. Jeżeli urodziliście się pod koniec lat 80 lub w latach 90 to pewnie w ogóle nie wiecie w czym rzecz. Ale spokojnie, Was też to czeka ;)

Trainers, the tailored skirt suit, false eyelashes, the mini skirt, the white wedding dress, the black leather jacket... All these items are so ordinary and common for us these days but they used to be innovative, fascinating and even shocking in the past. "100 ideas that changed fashion" is a book of Harriet Worsley, who studied at prestigious Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where today she teaches fashion communication and fashion journalism. Her book describes changes in fashion that have happened from the begining of 20th century. Apart from garments and make-up we can also read there about inventions in clothes productions (such as the zip, nylon or lycra) as well as learn how more complex ideas like the computer technology,  the ecological movement, the eternal youth concept or hip hop have influenced fashion.

Las zapatillas, el traje chaqueta, pestañas postizas, la mini falda, el vestido de boda blanco, la chaqueta biker... Todas estas prendas tan cotidianas y comúnes para nosotros hoy en dia, en el pasado eran innovadoras, fascinantes e incluso revolucionarias. "100 ideas que cambiaron la moda" es un libro de Harriet Worsley que presenta los cambios en la manera de vestirse que se han producido desde el comienzo del siglo 20. La autora estudió en el prestigioso Saint Martins College of Art and Design en Londres, donde ectualmente es profesora de comunicación y periodismo en temas de moda. En su libro aparte de las prendas e elementos de maquillaje revolucionarias, Worsley describe también los inventos significativos en la producción de ropa (por ejemplo, la cremallera, nylon o lycra), así cómo explica como los conceptos más complejos de la actuadlidad (como la computación, el movimiento ecológico, el concepto de eterna juventud o hip hop) han influenciado a la moda.

Trampki, kostium szyty na miarę, sztuczne rzęsy, spódniczka mini, biała suknia ślubna,  czarna ramoneska... Powszednie dla nas -kiedyś były nowatorskie; wzbudzały oburzenie, zaskakiwały i fascynowały. O 100 ideach, które zmieniły modę pisze w swojej książce Harriet Worsley, wykładowczyni prestiżowej Saint Martins College of Art and Design w Londynie. Autorka prezentuje zmiany i zjawiska, jakie zaszły w modzie od początku XX w. Oprócz elementów stroju i makijażu,  Worsley przedstawia też wynalazki, które zrewolucjonizowały produkcję ubrań, (np. zamek błyskawiczny, nylon i lycra) oraz przedstawia wpływ, jaki wywarły na modę szersze zjawiska i nurty takie jak np. rozwój technologii komputerowej, kult wiecznej młodości,  ruch ekologiczny czy hip hop.

Stuffocation

Moving partly, and temporarily, from Barcelona to London I took with me only a part of my garments. I must say that I am happy with the emptier wardrobe. During the moving I arrived at a conclusion that I have too much stuff. Few days ago I read an article saying that I am not alone. "There are millions of people right now, all around the world, feeling like they have too much stuff", says the trend analyst James Wallman whose book "Stuffocation" will be out in November. Speaking about "stuff" Wallman does not mean only garments, but all the "clutter". Unused sports equipment, unwanted Christmas presents, candle holders, frames etc. All the junk that we want to clear out and breath again. More does not mean better anymore. On the other hand, minimalistic approach seems very drastic. The point is not to buy anything, throw away or give away everything we do not wear and stick to basics, right?  "Unstuffing" is more about owning beautiful and good quality things, that tell something about us. Who wants to have a wardrobe full of polyester and fast-changing "trendy" garments anyway? We want to tell a story. We rather measure our life by experiences than physical things. That's why more and more people prefer to spend money on travelling. Or to someone "who has everything" we give as a present an experience: a concert ticket or a skydiving course. What is your opinion? 

 Durante mi mudanza temporal de Barcelona a Londres sólo me he llevado una parte de mi ropa. Tengo que admitir que estoy contenta con este armario reducido. Lo que traje a Londres son las prendas que mas me gustan y que me pongo a menudo. Haciendo la mudanza también llegue a la conclusión de que tengo demasiadas cosas. Hace unos días leí un artículo diciendo que no soy la única que piensa así. "Hay millones de personas ahora en todo el mundo sintiendo que tienen demasiadas cosas" , dice el analista de tendencias James Wallman cuyo libro " Stuffocation" saldrá en noviembre ("stuff"-cosas, "suffocation"-asfixia). Wallman hablando de las "cosas" no se refiere sólo a las prendas de ropa sino a todos los objetos que llenan nuestro espacio y no nos permiten respirar. Por otro lado, el enfoque minimalista parece muy drástico. No se trata de no comprar nada, tirar o regalar todo lo que no usamos y quedarnos con lo básico.  Es mejor optar por cosas bonitas, de buena calidad  y que dicen algo acerca de nosotros . ¿Quién, de todos modos,quiere tener un armario lleno de las prendas de poliéster y las tendencias pasajeras? Queremos contar una historia y medir nuestras vidas por las experiencias que por las cosas físicas. Por eso cada vez más y más personas prefieren gastar dinero en viajes. O a alguien "que lo tiene todo" le regalamos una experiencia : una entrada a un concierto o un curso de paracaidismo. ¿Qué opináis de este tema?

Przeprowadzając się częściowo i tymczasowo z Barcelony do Londynu zabrałam ze sobą rzeczy, które najbardziej lubię i noszę najczęściej. Muszę przyznać, że z taką przerzedzoną garderobą jest mi naprawdę dobrze. W czasie przeprowadzki doszłam do wniosku, że mam za dużo ubrań i dlatego część z nich oddałam, a cześć zostawiłam w Barcelonie. Dzięki temu teraz moja szafa już nie pęka w szwach. Kilka dni temu natknęłam się na ciekawy artykuł,  z którego wynikało, że nie jestem w moich odczuciach odosobniona. "Na całym świecie miliony ludzi czują, że mają za dużo rzeczy" - mówi James Wallman, badacz zjawiska, które nazwał "stuffocation" (z ang. stuff-rzeczy, suffocate-dusić się). Mówiąc o rzeczach Wallman nie ma na myśli tylko ubrań, ale wszystkich przedmiotów, które gromadzimy wokół nas. Takich jak nieużywany sprzęt sportowy, niechciane prezenty sprzed kilku lat, świeczniki  ramki, bibeloty. Krotko mówiąc wszystko, co zagraca naszą przestrzeń i sprawia, że się w niej "dusimy". Więcej już nie znaczy lepiej. Z kolei podejście minimalistyczne wydaje się bardzo radykalne. Przecież nie chodzi o to, żeby zrezygnować z zakupów,  oddać lub wyrzucić ubrania, w których nie chodzimy i ograniczyć się do tego, co całkowicie niezbędne.  Może jednak lepiej jest kupować rzeczy ładne i dobre jakościowo, które jednocześnie coś o nas mówią? Chyba nikt nie chce mieć szafy pełnej sezonowych trendów i poliestru, prawda? Bardziej niż przedmiot liczy się historia. I przeżycia.  Dlatego coraz więcej osób woli wydawać pieniądze na podróże, a osobie "która ma wszystko" dajemy w prezencie np. bilet na koncert lub kurs skakania ze spadochronem. Jestem ciekawa, co myślicie. Dodam jeszcze, że w listopadzie ukaże się książka Jamesa Wallmana pt. "Stuffocation".

Geek chic!?

In spite of the fact that for many reasons , also the weather, the south of Europe is and will remain close to my heart, I have to admit , autumn in London, even a bit rainy and foggy, has a lot of charm. Yellow and orange leaves rustling under my feet, warm light, fuzzy sweaters... All these hats, scarves and other layers that we can put on us. Raspberry tea with honey and lemon never tastes better than when the wind is raging outside. You can wrap yourself in a blanket like a cocoon and read. Recently the latest novel of my favourite author, Mario Vargas Llosa, has been published. It is entitled "El héroe discreto" (literally : "Quiet Hero") . The plot comprises of two parallel stories taking place in Llosa´s home country - Peru. Two main characters do not have many things in common despite the fact that they do not passively follow to the course of events and are not afraid to swim against the stream. They are the ordinary people who at some point of their life take an unusual , difficult , even controversial decision and this way they try to change their destiny . In my opinion, "El héroe discreto " is one of the best books of Llosa . Surprisingly for his fans, some "old friends " from his previous novels have appeared there.  Lately I have also "discovered" a great political drama series "House of Cards ", set in Washington, DC . The main character is played by sensational Kevin Spacey . Honestly, I have never seen any production with this actor that wasn't good. Even if it is a series. Of course even in autumn there's no reason to hide at home all the time. Especially when a lot is going on : concerts , cinema (one of the films that I have seen lately and especially liked was "Blue Jasmine" with superb Cate Blanchett), theatre, exhibitions (such as two I have visited recenly in the Design Museum: "The future is here : A new Industrial Revolution" , and "Extraordinary stories about ordinary thing" ). And what are your ways of spending autumn? 

A pesar del hecho de que, por muchas razones , también climáticas, el sur de Europa es y será el más cercano a mi corazón, tengo que admitir , el otoño en Londres , aunque un poco lluvioso y con niebla , tiene mucho encanto. Las hojas amarillas y naranjas crujiendo bajo mis zapatos, la luz cálida y suave, la sensación de ponerme los jersey gorditos... Los gorros,  las bufandas y otras estas capas de ropa que nos podemos poner. Además, una tasa de té con miel y limón tiene el mejor sabor cuando afuera el viento fuerte está soplando. Lo mejor entonces es enrollarse en una manta y leer. Últimamente se ha publicado la última novela de mi escritor favorito, Mario Vargas Llosa. "El héroe discreto" narra dos historias paralelas que tienen lugar en el país natal de Vargas Llosa - el Perú . Dos personajes principales no tienen muchas cosas en común a pesar de que ambos le echan un pulso al curso de los acontecimientos y no tienen miedo de nadar contra la corriente. Ambos son discretos rebeldes que en algún momento de su vida toman una decisión difícil y extraordinaria, y de esta manera tratan de cambiar su destino. En mi opinión, "El héroe discreto" es uno de los mejores libros de Vargas Llosa. Sorprendentemente para sus fans, algunos "viejos conocidos" del mundo vargasllosiano han aparecido en las páginas de su último libro. Últimamente también he "descubierto" una serie política sensacional - "House of Cards", ubicada en Washington. El personaje principal es interpretado por el genial Kevin Spacey. Por cierto, nunca he visto ninguna producción con este actor que no era buena. Incluso si se trata de una serie. Por supuesto, incluso en otoño uno no puede esconderse en su casa todo el tiempo. Especialmente cuando hay muchas cosas para hacer: ir a los conciertos y al cine ( una de las películas que he visto últimamente y me gustó especialmente fue "Blue Jasmine" con excelente Cate Blanchett ), al teatro, a visitar las exposiciones (como dos que he visitado últimamente en el Museo del Diseño : " El futuro ya está aquí : una nueva revolución industrial " y " Las historias extraordinarias sobre las cosas ordinarias" ) . ¿Y cuáles son vuestras formas de pasar el otoño?

Pomimo tego, że z wielu względów, także pogodowych, południe Europy jest i będzie mi najbliższe, to muszę przyznać, że typowa złota jesień, nawet trochę deszczowa i mglista, ma dużo uroku. Szeleszczące pod stopami żółto-pomarańczowe liście, ciepłe światło, szorstkość grubego swetra na skórze... Te wszystkie czapki, szaliki i inne warstwy, które możemy na siebie ponakładać.  Herbata z malin z miodem i cytryną, która smakuje najlepiej, gdy za oknem hula wiatr. Wtedy można otulić się ciepłym kocem i czytać.  Ostatnio ukazała się najnowsza powieść mojego ulubionego autora-Mario Vargas Llosy, pt. "El héroe discreto" (dosłownie: "Dyskretny bohater"). Akcja powieści dzieje się w ojczystym kraju Llosy, czyli w Peru, i przeplatają się w niej dwie historie, których głowni bohaterowie nie poddają się biernie biegowi wydarzeń i nie boją się iść pod prąd  Zwykli ludzie, którzy dokonując niecodziennego, trudnego, nawet kontrowersyjnego wyboru, próbują zmienić swoje przeznaczenie. Moim zdaniem "El héroe discreto" to jedna z lepszych książek Llosy. Co ciekawe, pojawiają się w niej niektórzy "starzy znajomi" z jego poprzednich powieści. Moim ostatnim "odkryciem" jest też świetny serial "House of Cards". Jest to dramat polityczny, którego akcja dzieje się w Waszyngtonie. Główną rolę gra w nim rewelacyjny Kevin Spacey. Chyba nie widziałam żadnej produkcji z jego udziałem,  która nie byłaby dobra. Nawet jeśli jest to serial. Jesień to jednak nie powód,  żeby zaszyć się w domu na dobre. Zwłaszcza, że dużo się dzieje: koncerty, kino (z filmów,  które ostatnio widziałam szczególnie podobało mi się "Blue Jasmine" z brawurową rolą Cate Blanchett), teatr, wystawy (np. niedawno byłam w Muzeum Designu na "Przyszłość jest tutaj: nowa rewolucja przemysłowa" i "Niezwykłe historie zwykłych przedmiotów", o których może wkrótce napiszę coś więcej). Once I have mentioned here that one of the things that I love about London are second-hand shops. Their local, non-commercial variety are charity shops. What are they? They are retail outlets selling mainly second-hand donated goods (not only clothes but also book, musical instruments, CDs, bric-a-brac) to raise funds for their parent charities. The first charity shop was open in the 19th century and currently in the UK and Ireland there are more than 10,000 of them. Why is it worth buying there? Not only because of the wide range of unique and retro goods that we can find there, but also to support the activities of the parent charity. Besides, shopping in the charity shops (and second hand shops in general) has its environmental and ethical benefits because of the reuse and recycling of goods. My favourite charity shops in London are located in Camden Town. I particulary like: Sue Ryder (a shop run by a charity providing care for people with life-changing illness), Scope (helping disabled people) and Traid (working to stop the exploitation of clothing factories workers). Una vez he mencionado aquí que una de las cosas que me gustan en Londres son las tiendas de segunda mano. Su variedad local y no comercial son las charity shops. ¿Qué son? Son tiendas que venden principalmente bienes de segunda mano (no sólo ropa , sino también libros, instrumentos musicales, discos, objetos de decoración, muebles) para recaudar fondos para la organización benéfica a la cual partenecen. La primera tienda de este tipo fue abierta en el siglo 19 . Actualmente en el Reino Unido e Irlanda hay más de 10.000. ¿Por qué vale la pena comprar allí? No sólo por su amplia gama de productos originales y retro, sino también porque así podemos apoyar una buena causa - actividad de una organización benéfica. Además, comprar en las charity shops (y en las tiendas de segunda mano en general) tiene sus beneficios ambientales y éticos, debidos a la reutilización y reciclaje de productos. Mis tiendas favoritas están situadas en Camden Town. Me gustan particularmente: Sue Ryder (partenece a una organización benéfica que ofrece atención a personas con enfermedades terminales), Scope (que ayuda a las personas con discapacidad) y Traid (que trabaja contra la explotación de trabajadores en las fábricas de ropa, sobre todo en Bangladesh y Vietnam). Pisałam kiedyś tutaj, że jedną z rzeczy, które uwielbiam w Londynie są second handy. Najpopularniejsza i typowo brytyjska ich odmiana to tzw. charity shops. Czym są? To outlety, w których sprzedaje się przedmioty (oprócz ubrań także książki, sprzęt muzyczny, płyty, bibeloty, meble) z drugiej ręki, a osiągnięty w ten sposób dochód przeznaczany jest na działalność organizacji pożytku publicznego, która dany sklep prowadzi. Pierwszy charity shop powstał w XIX w. Obecnie na Wyspach Brytyjskich znajduje się ich ponad 10 tys. Czemu warto tam zaglądać? Oprócz tego, że możemy tam upolować prawdziwe perełki, wspieramy także, przez nasze zakupy, organizacje charytatywne. Poza tym kupowanie w charity shops (i second handach w ogóle) przynosi korzyści ekologiczne, ponieważ pozwala na ponowne wykorzystanie ubrań i innych produktów. Moje ulubione (ze wzgledu na asortyment) londyńskie charity shops znajdują się w Camden Town i są to: sklep Sue Ryder (należący do fundacji prowadzącej hospicja), Scope (organizacja pomagająca osobom niepełnosprawnym) i Traid (który m.in. walczy z eksploatacją pracowników fabryk odzieży w Bangladeszu i Wietnamie). Mix and match

Henry Ford used to say that "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't-you're right" If we think that we might fail, we probably will. Instead of using our energy in the right way we will search for excuses and justifications. However, if we change our attitude and believe that we can succeed, we will start seeing possibilities and solutions instead of obstacles and potential reasons for a failure. 

Henry Ford decía: "tanto si piensas que puedes, como si piensas que no puedes, estás en lo cierto". Si pensamos que podemos fracasar, probablemente lo haremos. En lugar de utilizar bien nuestra energía, la consumiremos en la búsqueda de excusas y justificaciones. Sin embargo, si cambiamos nuestra actitud y empezamos a creer que vamos a tener éxito, dejaremos de ver obstáculos y potenciales motivos de fracaso y en cambio comenzaremos a darnos cuenta de posibilidades y soluciones. 

Henry Ford mawiał, że "jeśli uważasz, że coś potrafisz lub, że czegoś nie potrafisz - na pewno masz rację". Jeżeli myślimy, że coś nam się nie uda, to pewnie tak będzie. Zamiast dobrze spożytkować swoją energię, zużyjemy ją na szukanie wymówek i usprawiedliwień. Jeżeli natomiast zmienimy nasze nastawienie i uwierzymy, że nam się uda, to zamiast przeciwności i potencjalnych powodów do porażki zaczniemy widzieć możliwości i rozwiązania. Pewnie brzmi to jak coś oczywistego, ale czy rzeczywiście pozytywne myślenie przychodzi nam z łatwością w codziennym życiu?

Given the main topic of this blog, it may seem odd that generally I do not read fashion magazines. Well, maybe just at the hairdressers ;) But even then I mostly choose interviews or other longer texts. Unfortunately, you do not find many of them in this kind of magazines. First of all, they are filled in 50%-70% with advertisments. Before I even get to the table of contents I have to go through about 10 pages of ads. Besides, a large part of fashion magazines occupy statements of 20, 50, 100 most fashionable garments of the upcoming season. Finally, there are also more and more sophisticated photo sessions that significantly differ from real life. In general I meet my ( moderate ) need to get to know new trends in the Internet. Trends and fashion shows reports appear on dozens of websites and on many blogs. It is mainly on blogs where you can find "street fashion", not over-styled or even "dressed up" models. In addition, I usually reach for "Style" supplement to The Times which is not completely filled with pictures and advertisements, and ...  for H & M magazine, that, in spite of appearances, is holding a high level. And you? Do you read fashion magazines?

Dado el tema principal de este blog puede parecer extraño que en general no leo las revistas de moda. Bueno, tal vez cuando estoy en la peluquería ;) Pero incluso entonces elijo sobretodo las entrevistas y otros textos más largos, que, por desgracia, no son muy numerosos en las revistas de este tipo. Entre 50 y 70% de su contenido ocupan las publicidades. Antes de llegar a la tabla de contenido tengo que pasar por unos 10 páginas de anuncios. Una gran parte de las revistas de moda también ocupan los listados de las 20, 50 o 100 prendas más de moda esta temporada. Además, hay por supuesto las sesiones de fotos, cada vez más sofisticadas, que difieren significativamente de la vida real. Yo, en cambio, todo lo que quiero saber sobre las nuevas tendencias (y no es mucho) lo encuentro en Internet. Hay un montón de paginas y blogs sobre los trends y los desfiles de moda. Además , en los blogs se puede ver la "moda de la calle" y no las modelos muy estilizadas que incluso parezcan disfrazadas. Aparte de eso, habitualmente echo un vistazo a un suplemento dominical de The Times - "Style" que no está completamente lleno de fotografías y publicidades, y a la revista de... H&M , que, a pesar de las apariencias, sorprende por su alto nivel. ¿Y vosotras? ¿Soléis leer las revistas de moda? 

Biorąc pod uwagę główną tematykę tego bloga, może się wydać dziwne, że generalnie nie czytam magazynów o modzie. No, może jedynie u fryzjera ;) A i wtedy wybieram najczęściej wywiady lub inne dłuższe teksty, których niestety w tego typu pismach jest raczej mało. Jakieś 50%-70% ich objętości wypełniają reklamy. Zanim dotrę do spisu treści muszę przedrzeć się przez ok. 10 stron reklam. Dużą część magazynów o modzie zajmują tez zestawienia typu 20, 50, 100 najmodniejszych w tym sezonie (i tutaj można dowolnie wstawić: płaszczy, butów, kurtek itd). Oprócz tego znajdziemy też coraz bardziej wyrafinowane sesje zdjęciowe, które znacznie odbiegają od prawdziwego życia. Moją (umiarkowaną) potrzebę poznawania nowych trendów prawie w całości zaspokaja internet. Temat tendencji czy pokazów pojawia się na dziesiątkach stron internetowych i na wielu blogach. W dodatku to właśnie na blogach można zobaczyć "modę ulicy", a nie wystylizowane modelki. Oprócz tego sięgam po niedzielny dodatek do The Times - "Style", który nie jest wypełniony całkowicie zdjęciami i reklamami, oraz... magazyn H&M, który, wbrew pozorom, trzyma  wysoki poziom i jest w nim sporo do poczytania. A Wy? Czytacie pisma o modzie?
